This Sancerre Rouge has a beautiful bright ruby color. In the nose, it shows aromas of red berries, raspberries and a hint of orange zest along with subtle hints of violets. On the palate peppery spice mixes with ripe raspberry and pomegranate flavors
The Vacheron family's wine estate in Sancerre has been around for about 50 years now. The estate covers some 50 acres with a potential production of 400,000 bottles. Because of their uncompromising, rigorous quality criteria, they just barely make it to half! For the extraordinary 'Cru's ', also called 'parcelaires', there are extremely low yields of between 30 and 40 hectoliters. All vineyards have been organic and biodynamic since 2004, they are under the control of Ecocert and Demeter. Vacheron is also a member of Biodyvin and they even hold the U.S. National Organic Program designation.
Vacheronhas an excellent "mix" of vineyards, some located on the eastern hills with flint subsoil. The wines from these vineyards possess beautiful, ragged acidity, great minerality and length. The other vineyards are on the western side, where the other famous Sancerre villages of Bué, Verdigny and Chavignol are located. Here the subsoil is less hard and possesses much more limestone. This gives wines with a lovely fresh, almost 'crisp' style.
Vacheron is about the only winery that still actively uses oak for aging. They often buy used barrels, but from top domains such as Domaine de la Romanée.
