Richmond Plains, founded in 1991, is a very small family-owned winery. Based near Nelson at the top of New Zealand's South Island. A pioneer in organic wine, Richmond Plains grew New Zealand's first certified organic sauvignon blanc and pinot noir. All grapes are now grown biodynamically using intensive manual techniques to best care for the vines.
Richmond Plains believes in making great wines by working with nature in the vineyards. By using biodynamic methods, they are able to truly express the character of the terroir in the wines. They nourish the soil and vines with organic brews and compost teas. Diseases are controlled with natural beneficials such as Trichoderma and Bacilus Subtilus that fight off unwanted organisms. This lush green vineyard creates an attractive habitat for a variety of native birds, lizards, butterflies and beneficial insects.
The Koru logo on the label comes from New Zealand Maori mythology and symbolizes new beginnings, flourishing life and growth. Just as each season breathes new life into the vineyard and makes new wines; so the flavors of earlier vintages gently develop and unfold as they mature. The wines exemplify mastery and offer finesse over power. Superb reviews are the result.
