Nittardi Nectar Dei Bio 2019

The Nittardi Estate is located between Castellina and Panzano in the heart of the Chianti Classico region. Nittardi was first mentioned as "Nectar Dei" in 1183. In the 16th century, the winery belonged to Michelangelo Buonarroti, who produced his own wine here. He is known to have sent his wine to the pope in Rome as a "true gift."
The wine Nectar Dei is Nittardi's Super Premium Wine and was christened with the ancient name Nittardi from 1183, and according to tradition, the first bottles of Nectar Dei are offered to Pope Benedict XVI.
Nectar Dei is deep red in color with purple hints. In the nose ripe notes of cassis, blackberry and raspberry combined with vanilla, pink pepper, tobacco and leather. Beautifully concentrated with lush, round tannins and elegant notes like black cherries and licorice on the palate. The wine has a long and rich finish where the complexity of the wine shines through. Excellent for all varieties of red meat and game. Best served at about 18° C; uncork 2 hours before serving and decant if possible.

The grapes used for Nectar Dei grow in the Maremma vineyard, called Mongibello delle Mandorlaie, between Scansano and Magliano, just 8 km from the sea at an altitude of 250 meters. The soil is mainly sand with granite and schist stones with clay underneath.
Aging: 24 months in French barrique, 6 months in a concrete barrel and then six months of bottle aging.

  • About Nittardi

Nittardi, located in the heart of the Chianti Classico region, was purchased in 1982 by Peter Femfert, publisher and gallery owner in Frankfurt and his wife Stefania Canali, a historian from Venice. They restored Nittardi step by step. The vineyards were replanted and in 1992 the old room with wine barrels was replaced by a modern wine cellar.

A competent team was assembled, with Carlo Ferrini as consultant oenologist. Stefania and Peter's son, Léon Femfert, joined the team in early 2013. In 1999, another fantastic wine estate was purchased in Maremma, near the coast in southern Tuscany. Since then, 17 hectares have been planted with local and international grape varieties. Here Ad Astra and Nectar Dei, Nittardi's Super Tuscans, are produced.

As a tribute to former Nittardi owner, Michelangelo, the unique combination of art and wine is maintained at Nittardi. Each year, a well-known artist designs the label and wrapping paper used for a "limited edition" of Casanuova di Nittardi wine bottles. Started in 1981, the collection includes works by internationally renowned artists such as Hundertwasser, Corneille, Giuliano Ghelli, Igor Mitoraj, Yoko Ono, Guenter Grass and Dario Fo.
