Nittardi Chianti Classico 'Belcanto' Bio 2020

Belcanto has a ruby red color. In the nose, it has scents of juicy cherries, raspberries and spicy aromas with hints of Mediterranean herbs. The wine has a medium body with soft and juicy tannins on the palate and a fresh and velvety finish.
In the music world, Belcanto represents the harmony that a complete composition exudes. Belcanto also reflects the adage of the great wine critic Luigi Veronelli: "Wine is the earth's hymn to heaven." In every sense, Belcanto is the fitting name for Nittardi's latest composition. The label refers to the wine's history and terroir: eight pebbles in the colors of the gray galestro soil and the typical red hue of Chianti Classico - like the eight notes of the scale and the eight grape varieties of Belcanto. And looking from this mosaic of eight pebbles, the face of the historic owner of Nittardi: the Italian master painter and archetypal "Renaissance man," Michelangelo Buonarroti.
All grapes come from Nittardi's vineyards in the municipality of Castellina in Chianti. Half of the grapes for Belcanto come from vineyards in Nittardi, located 450 meters above sea level, while the other half come from a vineyard near Villa Rosa, south of Castellina at 270 meters. The Villa Rosa vineyard, planted in 1968, has Sangiovese and small amounts of seven other local grape varieties, including Canaiolo, Colorino, Malvasia Nera, Ciliegiolo, Mammolo, Foglia Tonda and Pugnitello. Both vineyards enjoy a soil mix of limestone and clay with a rich skeleton of Galestro, the local name for slate, giving the wine a pleasing minerality.
Aging: 12 months in French oak barrels (500 liters)., 4 months in concrete vats, and a few months in the bottle.

  • About Nittardi

Nittardi, located in the heart of the Chianti Classico area, was purchased in 1982 by Peter Femfert, publisher and gallery owner in Frankfurt and his wife Stefania Canali, a historian from Venice. They restored Nittardi step by step. The vineyards were replanted and in 1992 the old room with wine barrels was replaced by a modern wine cellar.

A competent team was assembled, with Carlo Ferrini as consultant oenologist. Stefania and Peter's son, Léon Femfert, joined the team in early 2013. In 1999, another fantastic wine estate was purchased in Maremma, near the coast in southern Tuscany. Since then, 17 hectares have been planted with local and international grape varieties. Here Ad Astra and Nectar Dei, Nittardi's Super Tuscans, are produced.

As a tribute to former Nittardi owner, Michelangelo, the unique combination of art and wine is maintained at Nittardi. Each year, a well-known artist designs the label and wrapping paper used for a "limited edition" of Casanuova di Nittardi wine bottles. Started in 1981, the collection includes works by internationally renowned artists such as Hundertwasser, Corneille, Giuliano Ghelli, Igor Mitoraj, Yoko Ono, Guenter Grass and Dario Fo.
