Domaine des Hauts Châssis Crozes-Hermitage 'L'Essentiel' Bio 2021

L'Essentiel has a deep golden color with amber tones. The aroma is an intensely intoxicating expression of candied fruit with floral and spicy notes: ylang-ylang, dried apricots and candied citrus, ginger, cardamom and fenugreek. The contrasting flavor has a languid aspect of volume, roundness and creaminess on one side with the aromatic power of licorice and balsamic on the other.

The grapes are harvested by hand and sorted directly at the vineyard. The grape bunches are pressed, followed by cold settling after 24-48 hours. After fermentation in tanks, the wine matures for 6 months in stainless steel tanks on its fine lees. The vineyards of Crozes-Hermitage are located on the east bank of the Rhône River at the 45th parallel. The prestige vineyards of Crozes-Hermitage are the largest in the northern appellation and include 11 villages producing red wines from syrah and white wines from roussanne and marsanne. The white wines from roussanne and marsanne have a beautiful golden color, are rich but dry and well balanced.
  • About Domaine des Hauts Châssis

Domaine des Hauts Châssis is located in the heart of the place called 'Les Hauts Châssis' in the south of the Crozes-Hermitage appellation. Franck Faugier took over the daily management of this magnificent family estate in 2003. Until then, table fruit was grown, apricots, cherries and peach, in addition to wine grapes. Since then, the fruit orchards have been sold and only vines are grown on the total 17 acres. Franck broke with the custom of selling grapes and wine to the Cave Cooperative and began bottling his, now organic, superb wines himself.

The vineyards are located on several parcels in Northern Rhone. Including 14 hectares in Crozes-Hermitage red and 1 hectare in white, 1.5 hectares in Saint-Joseph and 0.5 hectares in Saint-Péray. On a modest scale, there is a collaboration with a colleague in Condrieu and Hermitage, both white and red.

To perfectly process the fruit, the estate, in its modern barrel room, currently counts 22 smaller stainless steel tanks. For final maturation in oak, they have classic 225-liter barriques, 400-liter barrels and 600-liter demi muids. Only a small proportion of the barrels are entirely new. In terms of style, all the wines are point-pure and characteristic of, and especially syrah, from this part of France. Since 2017, all of the estate's wines have been certified organic.
