Domaine des Beaumont Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Millandes 2018

Thierry Beaumont has once again managed to get the best out of his Morey-Saint-Denis 1er cru Les Millandes, a terroir located below the grand cru Clos-de-la-Roche. The aroma is harmonious, ripe black fruit is combined with spices and toasted nuts. The taste seduces with its finesse, freshness and firm tannins that are beautiful and silky on the palate. A wine with complexity, gluttony and a remarkably long finish.

The pinot noir grapes come from a clay-limestone soil lying in Côte de Nuits. The vines are 70 years old. Aged 12 months with 60% new oak.
  • About the Winery

Although this family estate has been associated with winemaking for seven generations, it is only from 1991 that the current line was initiated. Before that, there was a contract with Bourgognereus Labouré-Roi that saw to it that production was maximized. When this contract expired, Thierry Beaumont took the company in hand. First of all, the vineyards, where a line was immediately drawn under the maximum production in order to opt for harvest limitation and thus higher quality grapes.

In total, the domain counts some 5.5 hectares of vineyards divided between the villages Morey-St-Denis, Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny. Together 28 different plots that are eventually assembled into 10 different wines. The domain's annual yield is 25 to 30,000 bottles.

Ownership of the plots lies with four family members in total, Thierry, an aunt, his grandparents and his mother. From 1991 through 1998, the proceeds were sold in bulk to the "négoce" the well-known trading houses. But starting with the superbe harvest of 1999, the finest qualities were sold under the estate label. In some years, Thierry also buys fruit from his neighbors, those wines are sold under the name Thierry Beaumont and not Domaine des Beaumont.

Son Vincent is the commercial manager, not an insignificant task since some 60% of the harvest finds its way to markets outside France. Because the estate was technically behind the times, a new cuverie was built and inaugurated in 2009. Concrete vats were built to accompany fermentation properly. All the fruit is picked by hand and undergoes two quality checks, first in the vineyard and then upon entering the cuverie. The bunches are 100% destemmed. After maceration and fermentation, the wine matures for 12 to 14 months in French oak 'pièces'. These are purchased from various barrel makers. On average, the villages wines mature in 1/3rd new wood and the premier and Grand Cru wines mature 2/3rds in new wood.
