Domaine de Baal Grand Vin 2016

Grand Vin has a dark ruby red color. It has a complex aroma and immediately impresses with its almost explosive, peppery fruit scents, which is later dominated by spice-roasted and licorice aromas. Full and powerful on the palate with nuances of black fruit, red berries, smoked meat, clove and mint. The wine finishes elegant, silky and persistent.

Aging: 16-18 months in new and used French oak barrels.

  • About Domaine de Baal

In the northeast corner of Lebanon rises one of the most celebrated sanctuaries of the ancient world: The city of Baalbek, named after the Phoenician deity Baal, god of fertility, and home to the great Roman temple of Bacchus, god of wine. Also in this corner is Domaine de Baal at an altitude of 1,200 meters. The estate is situated on the limestone slopes on the western side of Mont-Lebanon, overlooking the Bekaa Valley, a fertile land once called the "wheat loft" of the Romans.

The estate's first vines were planted in 1994, but it wasn't until 2006, after spending many years in Saint-Emilion, that owner and winemaker Sebastien Khoury returned to Lebanon and produced the estate's first vintage.

Respect for nature is paramount for Khoury. He has planted his seven acres with organically grown cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot, syrah, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc. The limestone and clay soils, organic processes that are closely monitored and fully respect the life cycles of both the soil and vineyard, along with low intervention in the cellar, allows Domaine de Baal to produce fine and elegant wines each year that reflect the beautiful Mediterranean terroir.

With minimalist, eco-friendly buildings and architecture, the one-meter-thick walls, along with the green roofs covered with earth and plants, provide the ideal environment for the winemaking and aging processes. The vaulted oak barrel cellar was built mid-ground to ensure a year-round average temperature of 13 to 16ºC and humidity of 60 to 70%.
