This young company (founded in 1989) is the brainchild of winemaker Félix Callejo and is now continued by his children, Cristina, José-Felix, Beatriz and Noelia. In addition to their own wine estate, the children gained practical experience with others: Pétrus (Bordeaux), Torres (Chile), Araujo (Napa) and Cobos (Mendoza). In 2000 the move was made to organic production.
The vineyards are located, at an average altitude of 900 meters, in the northern part of the 'DO' Ribera del Duero near a small wine village Sotillo de la Ribera. The subsoil there consists of strongly calcareous soils, gravelly soils in the dry river beds, sandy soil and clay in the lower parts. A total of 27 vineyard plots with a total area of nearly 55 hectares are cultivated.
The harvest is done manually and after the sorting tables, the grapes go to the spotless stainless steel fermentation tanks. All "cellaring" takes place under gravity, without pumping. The wines are aged partly in concrete vats and partly in wood, using traditional 225-liter barrels as well as 500-liter "demi muids."
Bodegas Félix Callejo grosses in high scores, there is not a single wine below 90 points and the top ones get 95 to 99 points from international wine writers.
