Nittardi Ad Astra Bio 2019

Ad Astra has a lush ruby red color. It has a fascinating character of spice and chili with in the nose aromas of black currant, plum and cherry fruit with a hint of licorice. A fine wine with a complex bouquet. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a fresh and elegant finish.
The name Ad Astra comes from the Latin expression Per Aspera Ad Astra - "a rough road leads to the stars." An expression that also applies to great wines, for greatness requires much loving work and care in the vineyards. Ad Astra is an accessible yet serious red wine that is a delight both young and after aging.
The grapes used for Ad Astra grow in the Maremma vineyard, called Mongibello delle Mandorlaie, between Scansano and Magliano, just 8 km from the sea at an altitude of 250 meters. The terroir here is mainly sand with granite stones and clay underneath.
Aging: 12 months in French oak barrique and tonneaux, several months in concrete and subsequent aging in bottle for 6 months.
  • About Nittardi

Nittardi, located in the heart of the Chianti Classico region, was purchased in 1982 by Peter Femfert, publisher and gallery owner in Frankfurt and his wife Stefania Canali, a historian from Venice. They restored Nittardi step by step. The vineyards were replanted and in 1992 the old room with wine barrels was replaced by a modern wine cellar.

A competent team was assembled, with Carlo Ferrini as consultant oenologist. Stefania and Peter's son, Léon Femfert, joined the team in early 2013. In 1999, another fantastic wine estate was purchased in Maremma, near the coast in southern Tuscany. Since then, 17 hectares have been planted with local and international grape varieties. Here Ad Astra and Nectar Dei, Nittardi's Super Tuscans, are produced.

As a tribute to former Nittardi owner, Michelangelo, the unique combination of art and wine is maintained at Nittardi. Each year, a well-known artist designs the label and wrapping paper used for a "limited edition" of Casanuova di Nittardi wine bottles. Started in 1981, the collection includes works by internationally renowned artists such as Hundertwasser, Corneille, Giuliano Ghelli, Igor Mitoraj, Yoko Ono, Guenter Grass and Dario Fo.
