St. Michael Eppan Pinot Noir Riserva Sanct Valentin 2018

Pinot noir has been grown in South Tyrol since 1850 and is known locally as blauburgunder or pinot nero it is the main red wine of St. Michael Eppan. Producing top quality pinot noir is a great challenge for any winemaker, as it is very demanding both in terms of soil and climate and in the cellar.pinot noir Sanct Valentin, has been part of this line since 1995 and only the best and oldest vineyards have been used. Low yields and attentive care produce a fine, sensual red wine that stands out for its balanced body and fine tannins. It has excellent aging potential. The color of the wine is ruby red. In the nose, it has aromas of small berries, violets and smoked vanilla. As the wine ages longer, it also shows notes of porcini mushrooms and truffles. On the palate, it is spicy, supple and seductive.
At 400 to 550m altitude in several vineyards in St. Michael Eppan, the grapes grow. Facing south, southeast and southwest. The terroir consists of moraine rubble and limestone gravel. Manual harvesting of the Pinot Nero takes place in mid-September. This is followed by acold maceration (three days) with subsequent fermentation and gentle pressing. Fermentation in stainless steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation and aging in barrique tonneau. Assembly takes place after about a year and then it is aged in large oak barrels for another six months.

    The Cantina St. Michael-Eppan cooperative will be one hundred and fourteen years old in 2021 and is a benchmark for any wine lover. The Cantina has made a crucial contribution in achieving the high status of Alto Adige wines over the last 20 years. Winemaker Hans Terzer is the 'kellermeister' with unparalleled technical skills, who for 40 years has been translating intuition and knowledge of the hinterland into a range of wines that combines unparalleled quality with character.     The wines of St. Michael-Eppan are divided into three lines: Classico, Selezione and Sanct Valentin. White wines make up 70% of production and the remaining 30% are reds. Among red wines, the local grape schiava occupies the most important place, alongside pinot noir, lagrein, merlot and cabernet-sauvignon. Among white wines, weissburgunder plays an important role, alongside sauvignon-blanc, gewürztraminer, chardonnay and pinot grigio. All wines are characterized by great freshness, in which the pure, cool mountain climate of South Tyrol (that's how the Alto Adige region is popularly called) can be tasted. Winemaker Hans Terzer has been particularly successful in giving all individual wines their own identity.

    St. Michael-Eppan has not only been listed in the Gambero Rosso with "Tre Bichierri" for 32 years in a row. They may also call themselves Premio CANTINA COOPERATIVA DELL'ANNO 2021.
