Montevetrano Montevetrano 2014

Montevetrano takes its name from a medieval castle dating back to Roman times. A former property of the French Bourbons, the estate itself was the inspiration for this blend of French varietals Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with the Campanian king of red grapes - Aglianico. Montevetrano is one of Italy's most sought-after wines, delighting dozens of wine lovers around the world with its distinctive character and rich spectrum of flavors. For 24 consecutive years, this wine has received Tre Bicchiere in the Gambero Rosso.

Vintage 2014 is deep ruby red in color, aromas of blackberries and spice complementing undertones of black currant, licorice, tobacco, earth and leather. On the palate, Montevetrano is full-bodied, yet elegant with and rich, silky texture. The winefinishes fresh, juicy and poignant, with a strong saline nuance, fine-grained tannins and terrific length. A beauty now but will only become more beautiful as the wine ages.
Between late September and early October, Montevetrano harvests the Merlot grape first, followed by the Cabernet Sauvignon and finally the Aglianico. Fermentation initially takes place in steel vats for about 15 days, after which the wine is transferred to new French oak barrels for 12-14 months. The process is traditional but also strictly controlled, ensuring good refinement and balanced aging. The process also ensures that the grapes retain the typical regional characteristics of Montevetrano. Cotarella, the winemaker, is particularly proud of this wine, the very first iconic wine he has made; he considers it the father of his red wines.
  • About Montevetrano

In 1983, photographer Silvia Imparato decided to do something beautiful with her parents' (then) 4-hectare vineyard. Together with a group of fellow wine enthusiasts (mostly Bordeaux lovers), she set to work. In addition to the local aglianico grape, cabernet-sauvignon was planted, later followed by merlot.

The first harvest came with the year 1989. Soon after, wine writer Robert Parker discovered this unique red wine and wrote it into the heavens. From one day to the next, the tone was set; Montevetrano had become a superstar overnight. Steadily, the acreage grew to 6-and then 11-acres.

In 1992, Sylvia invited the then "up-and-coming" oenologist Riccardo Cotarella to come and help her with that year's harvest. That connection still exists today, and in the meantime Cotarella has become one of Italy's all-important winemakers. Montevetrano falls under the appellation of origin I.G.P. Colli di Salerno and today has 26 hectares. The grape composition is 60% cabernet-sauvignon, 30% merlot and 10% aglianico.

The "golden blend" of Montevetrano wine is good for 23 years the highest award of "Tre Bicchieri" in the famous wine guide "Gambero Rosso.
