Complex aromas of black currants, spices, liquorice and dark chocolate dominate the nose. The taste is smooth and luxurious, with layered flavors of red and black fruits. A powerfully structured wine with elegant, fine-grained tannins and a persistent, dry finish.
The grapes for the Beeslaar Pinotage come from a vineyard of 2.5 ha, located on a southeastern slope at about 200 meters above sea level, in the vicinity of the Simonsberg north of Stellenbosch. The area receives about 650 mm of rain per year, mainly during the winter. One of the main quality factors is the southeasterly wind that blows for most of the summer, which not only cools the vineyards but also limits the growth of the bushvine plants.
The predominantly slate soils in this vineyard give the wine a uniquely earthy character, while the old bush tendrils always result in a smaller cluster and berry size, producing a wine with immense color and flavor concentration.
Vintage 2018 one of the driest vintages in recent history. Thunderstorms in December created a lot of nitrogen in the vineyards, stimulating aggressive growth. The average daytime temperatures were 20 ° C warmer than the long-term average, but without significant heat waves. Cooler nights allowed the vines to recover from the harsh stress of the hot, dry days.
The winemaking philosophy is simple: fermentation in an open top concrete tank, with regular peel pushdowns every two hours. This ensures a homogeneous, lower temperature distribution throughout the barrel to prevent the extraction of unwanted aggressive phenolic compounds, while also exposing the fermenting juice to more oxygen, which in turn helps to fix the color of the wine. After 3 days, the juice is extracted from the skins, which are then pressed. The wine is then transferred to 225L French oak barrels (40% new), where malolactic fermentation and maturation will follow over a period of 21 months.
Always a true expression of an incredible vineyard, the Beeslaar Pinotage shows the strength and concentration that these ancient bush vines produce.
