It suffered on the banks of the Corgo River, a tributary north of the Douro River, right next to the mouth where the Corgo and Douro rivers merge, close to the town of Peso da Régua. It belonged to the legendary Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira and is still owned by her descendants today.

Quinta do Vallado was acquired by António Bernardo Ferreira (uncle and father-in-law of Dona Antónia) in 1818. The main activity of Quinta do Vallado was the production of port wine, which was sold by the family's port house - Casa Ferreira.

This happened until 1987, when Casa Ferreira was sold. After the sale of Casa Ferreira, new challenges arose and in 1993, under the leadership of Guilherme Álvares Ribeiro and his wife Maria Antónia Ferreira, the company decided to expand into the production, bottling and marketing of private label wines. In the same year, under the direction of Prof. Nuno Maghalhães, the Quinta began a thorough restructuring of its vineyards, with the goal of producing high-quality grapes.

The new vineyards were planted with a single variety in each plot, breaking the old tradition of mixing different varieties in the same vineyard. Today, Quinta do Vallado has 10 hectares of old vineyards planted between the 1920s and 1950s, including Vinha da Granja in 1929 and Vinha da Coroa in 1958. The remaining 55 hectares were planted in the 1990s.

In Vila Nova de Foz Côa, Quinta do Vallado acquired Quinta do Orgal where 35 hectares of organically grown vineyards have been planted since 2009. Quinta do Vallado is currently managed by João Ferreira Álvares Ribeiro (CEO) and Fransisco Ferreira (Board Member, Agricultural Management, Winemaking and Production), with assistance from Francisco Olazábal (Winemaker). All great-great-grandsons of Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira.

Under this management, a unique and modern building was constructed in 2009 to house the new winery and barrel cellar, which combine state-of-the-art technology with high-quality architectural design, making it one of the most visited sites in the Douro Valley.

<span title="" data-mce-fragment="""1">Made from a blend of 50% Syrah, 30% Carignan and 20% Mouvedre, this cuvée has real personality. The beautiful property also dates from that period. It was built using locally available limestone. As early as 1908, the Bordeaux guide of guides, de Féret (later Cocks et Féret, Bordeaux et ses Vins) praised the wines of this Château as among the best in the entire appellation. In 1970, his father bought the entire property. Coming from Argentina, where he took classes with Don Bosco in Mendoza. This explains his love for Malbec. Father studied oenology in Reims and later Bordeaux. To gain international wine experience, he also worked for years at one of the Bordeaux trading houses. When he saw Grand-Launay, he was immediately sold. Launay means as much as l'eau (water). It is moister there than elsewhere and great care must be taken with each vineyard to ensure adequate drainage. Under his leadership, the chateau grew from 10 to 25 hectares. Not long before his death, he called in his son Pierre-Henri. The three other children, daughters, had no interest in the business. Son Pierre Henri worked in Paris as a technician. He agreed and provisionally worked at the chateau for 1 year, then never left. In 2005, he obtained his degree as an oenologist. Father died in 2008. In 2009, there was massive hail damage. With the clear brain of a techie, he figured out that losing 50% of the harvest is just as big a risk, as losing 50% due to the switch to organic techniques. He immediately began working according to Ecocert guidelines. By now, all of Grand-Launay's vineyards are biodynamic and Demeter certified. He is also active with wines without added sulfite.

Pierre-Henri harvests partly manually, but also has parcels harvested by machine. 'Best of two worlds' is what it's called. On the clay/lime soil, he grows only one white grape, sauvignon-gris, of which he owns 1 hectare. It is also drier than average, as there is considerably less rainfall than in other parts of Bordeaux.

The vineyards (28 hectares) of winemaker and oenologist Pierre-Henri Cosyns date back to 1841, the year of its founding. The handsome property also dates from that period.

The high quality of their products, the preservation and promotion of a healthy terroir and balanced planting of vines are the foundation of the company. Pinot gris and riesling are their hobby grapes, the blue grape has their passion and rare local grape varieties are their vocation. The winery has always worked to produce good to very good quality wines. Very important is the natural characterization of the wine. This means that the nature of the terroir and the taste of the grapes is reflected in the wine. All the wines here are very typical of the grape variety. Their 'do it yourself' winemaking package was voted 'Demeter product of the year' in 2014 and they received several medals at Bio Millesime, including the coveted gold medal with 'mention spéciale' for the red "Jomax".

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0627/9652/9888/files/gustavshof-spaetburgunder-jomax-2015.jpg?v=1723548250
sophenia-altosur-malbec
Sophenia Altosur Malbec 2021

This wine has attractive red and purple hues. Part of the wine is fermented in 10,000-liter cement tanks and part in double-row 20,000-liter stainless steel tanks. It is also drier than average, as there is considerably less rainfall than in other parts of Bordeaux.

The vineyards (28 hectares) of winemaker and oenologist Pierre-Henri Cosyns date back to 1841, the year of its founding. The handsome property also dates from that period.

Located on a large terrace of pebbles deposited by the Rhône and Durance rivers, it is the southernmost of the Rhône's vineyards. The gravelly alluvium composed of red clay and rolled pebbles promotes convection. The climate is characterized by very sunny summers, dry but interrupted by irregular rain showers. It is thus of the Mediterranean type but undergoes a real maritime influence. This specific climatology of Costières deeply characterizes the wines of the "appellation" and constitutes an exceptional asset for producing authentic wines.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0627/9652/9888/files/chateau-vessiere-philippe-de-vessiere-rouge-2017_ded62fd4-60db-4021-a5a1-c9a8f08f5ff1.jpg?v=1778126519
chateau-vessiere-ortus
Château Vessière Ortus Bio 2022

Ortus is Latin for birth and/or a beginning.
